What Type of Shed Should I Buy?

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

Buying a shed for your home or garden is not an easy decision. You need to think about size and how much stuff you’re going to put in it. You also need to think about what material is the best one.

Let's go through the 3 main types of sheds and find out which one is best for you.

Wooden Sheds

Wood is a versatile material and fits in with any garden design or style. You can paint, stain, or treat your shed to reflect or contrast with its surroundings. But unless you buy a pressure-treated shed, you will need to refinish it every year or two, depending on its location. Wood will rot if it isn’t adequately protected, so you must be sure you are ready to take on this task. Wood carries the additional risk of termites.

Plastic Sheds

Plastic comes by many names, but these are the sheds you won’t need to worry about. There will be no staining, painting, or rusting. Instead of Vinyl go for HDPE Plastic sheds as these sheds can endure practically all types of weather, are easy to clean and virtually maintenance-free. These are ideal for UAE’s hot, dusty and humid climate.

Metal Sheds

If budget is an issue, a metal shed could be the best way to go. As with the plastic-type, you won’t need to worry about regular treating or painting. If the metal is galvanised and of a good thickness, it should withstand most weather conditions. However, over time they are still likely to show signs of rust due to humidity and rain (which is now becoming common in UAE due to cloud seeding operations!). Metal sheds are much lighter than alternatives so make sure you anchor those to a solid base. Neglecting this step could lead to your shed disappearing in high winds – not something you would want. Metal will tend to absorb more heat than plastic ones during UAE’s peak summer and make the inside hotter.

Which one is right for you?

Only you know what size you want to get, why you want to use it, and the overall look and features you want. If personalization is a factor, wooden shed it is! If the price is a factor, metal shed it is. On the other hand, for a good price and maintenance-free longer-term solution, a plastic shed might prove the better decision for you! Popular shed brands such as Lifetime come with a warranty and ensure peace of mind.
